Day 1

Arrive Johannesburg

On arrival at Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo Airport, you will be met by a Lion World Travel representative, who will assist you in checking in at your hotel.

Make your way to OR Tambo International Airport to connect with your scheduled flight to Maun.  This flight is not included in the cost.

Upon arrival in Maun, you will be met by a Lion World Travel representative and assisted to your Mack Air charter flight to Camp Kalahari.

Note: Luggage restrictions on all Botswana light aircraft transfer flights is 20kg/44lbs in soft bags - including hand luggage.

On arrival at the airstrip, you will be met by your guide and transferred to Camp Kalahari.

The camp sits on the edge of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans. Furnished with an eclectic mix of African furnishings and colonial antiques. Guests can relax in the lounge and dining area or cool off in the swimming pool. All the Meru tents are spacious and have en-suite bathrooms with indoor and outdoor showers, fans and private verandas with a seating area.

Enjoy a range of year-round activities: get up close and personal with a gang of friendly habituated meerkats, walk with Zu/’hoasi Bushmen for a glimpse into their ancient culture, game drives to experience unique desert wildlife, visit the Fallen Baobab, campsite of Livingstone and Selous and one of Africa’s three largest, oldest trees.

During the dry season there is quad biking across the lunar expanse of the pans.

During the wet season experience the spectacular migration of zebra and wildebeest, the second biggest in Africa and the last remaining in Southern Africa.

Game Drive

Depart on daily game drives in custom built 4x4s to spot the unique desert wildlife that inhabit the pans, to view the elusive brown hyena or Kalahari lion. Your experienced safari guide will help you discover a desert landscape, pulsating with life while enjoying bush picnics, morning coffees and chilled drinks.

A favorite activity is to get up close and personal with the families of habituated meerkats.

Meerkat Experience

Head out from camp at sunrise, so that you are ready to view these delightful omnivores as they set off in search of their breakfast.

You can walk amongst them and if you take a seat, you might be lucky enough to be mistaken for a termite mound, where you will be used as a look out point for predators.

Today you will transfer by road to the airstrip to connect with Mack Air charter flight to Little Sable.  Please note there can be up to 3 stops en route at other camps.

Little Sable is an intimate, tented retreat located in the grasslands of the Khwai Private Reserve in the greater Okavango Delta. There is always something to see a different activity to enjoy every day, from game drives to mokoro trips and boat safaris.

Little Sable – Safari Tent

The camp has 8 tented rooms on raised wooden platforms to maximize the views across the grasslands. Each tent has a ceiling fan and ensuite bathroom with indoor and outdoor showers, and a private veranda.  

Depart on game drives in comfortable game viewing vehicles for morning and late afternoon safaris. Your guide has all the expertise and knowledge to find you some of the best kept secrets and most loved wildlife in the Okavango Delta.

Mokoro trips

Mokoro trips (seasonal activity) are one of the most iconic Okavango Delta experiences, where you can wind your way around the crystal clear waterways.

Today you will take a helicopter transfer to Mokolwane Camp, situated in the open flood plains. This is one of the most remote camps in the Okavango Delta.

This is a real haven for elephants that love the palm trees in this area.

Mokolwane Camp

Located on the Matsebi River, Mokolwane Camp offers tree houses that are 6 feet off the ground each with a private bathroom and superb views.

Enjoy morning and late afternoon game drives depart to explore the beautiful yet diverse ecosystems. Going between the islands and the floodplains, keep an eye out for predators stalking the big herds. 

Wind your way along crystal clear channels in a mokoro (seasonal), floating between the water lilies and the papyrus reeds.

  • Your Lion World Travel independent safari includes a “meet and greet” upon arrival. While on safari you will have local experts, rangers, drivers and/or trackers join you on your day tours, game drives and safari activities.

  • ​Travel to Africa often requires an overnight flight. For safaris where international airfare is not included, please arrange flights to arrive before Day 1 of itinerary.

Visas

  • Canadian passport holders require visas for Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. E-Visas can be obtained prior to departure from the relevant Embassy or High Commission in Ottawa, or on arrival at the port of entry. Visas on arrival will not be issued for Kenya.

Passports

  • For visitors to South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Kenya, and Tanzania, passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the intended return date.
  • Passport must contain at least 2 blank visa pages (each) for South Africa and Zimbabwe and 3 blank visa pages (each) for Tanzania, Kenya, and Mozambique.

Vaccinations & Health Precautions

  • Malaria is prevalent in the countries included in this itinerary. It is recommended to consult a doctor or travel clinic prior to travel regarding the appropriate precautions to take.
  • Yellow fever vaccination is recommended prior to arrival in Tanzania and required if arriving within 6 days after leaving or transiting countries with risk of yellow fever transmission.
  • Other vaccinations that might be considered before you travel include typhoid, hepatitis A and B, meningitis, and tetanus.
  • For information, visit your family physician or the Canadian Government Travel Health website at travel.gc.ca.
  • Covid protocols and entry requirements are also in place for visitors to Africa. Requirements vary between countries. Please speak to your Africa Specialist for information specific to your itinerary.

Traveling with children

  • If you are travelling to South Africa with a child/children under the age of 18 you must travel with an unabridged birth certificate, in English, even if both parents are traveling with the child(ren). Airlines will be forced to deny boarding if the required documentation is not produced.
